Strawberries and other goodies!

This is a rather ‘chatty’ Newsletter; however, I hope you will take the time to read it!

We have Strawberries!!

Peaches coming soon!

Last year, we didn’t have many Strawberries available! This year, we are truly blessed to have those plump, juicy, sweet fruits available from:

Back River Farm
Burnell Farms
Watsonia Farms

Organic Strawberries are available in quarts from Burnell Farms and quarts and/or gallons from Back River Farm (Farmers’ Sales Table this week and on Market starting next week) and Watsonia Farms!

Remember, these are ORGANIC Strawberries. They have not been sprayed with pesticides, herbicides or fungicides. They may not be ‘perfectly shaped’ but they will be fresh and flavorful! Pay attention now — this is important. Here is a hint – when you get your berries home, soak them in a solution of Vinegar and Water 1 part Vinegar to 3 parts Water (preferably filtered water or spring water). I use Apple Cider Vinegar (Bragg’s) however, white vinegar will work also. Soak those little red juicy globes of strawberry goodness for about a half hour; swish the water around when you think about it. The soak will remove any spores that may be present on the berries and will prolong the life of them greatly. After the soak, rinse well. I spin my berries dry (salad spinner) and then put in a glass container lined with a paper towel. I do not put the lid on tightly so that moisture does not accumulate and there is air flow! My berries keep til I finish the last one ~ sometimes up to 5 days later! Try it, it really does work! (Thanks Mom!)

My plan is to purchase some every week while they are available and become a ‘Dehydrating Fool’! I will also freeze some to ensure enjoyment of this wonderful fruit during the winter season…which is a perfect segue into..

Eating Local, Seasonal and Preserving the Harvest

I believe that we choose to use the Market venue because we want to 1)know where our food comes from (KNOW YOUR FARMER) 2)support local Farmers 3)have the ability to purchase nutritious food without chemicals, GMO’s, sprays, poisons 4)have access to great foods and a great community of like-minded folks!

The Standard American Diet is all about convenience and laden with really BAD stuff! I choose to eat LOCAL and SEASONAL! It is a CHOICE and I am happy that I have that choice! But I want to have Strawberries and Fruit, Cauliflower and Green Beans, Corn (GMO free of course) and other Veggies all year round. THAT is the reason, I am also a big believer in Preserving the Harvest! Freezing, Canning, Dehydrating are the answer to that challenge!

Do you need help or ideas on how to ‘Preserve the Harvest’? Just ask! I will be sharing my journey of freezing, canning and dehydrating with you through this Spring Summer and Fall. Want to share the journey? Let me know!

Market Closes at 8:00pm Monday!

Thank you to those who have already placed orders!

Offerings you
may
definitely want to check out…

There were a couple of ‘whoops’ in the Cereal orders and Breakfast Sausage orders some of us received from Heritage Farm last week. Greg’s new helper pulled our orders and so let’s chalk it up to a learning curve! Greg will make everything right this week! We apologize for any inconvenience and if you need recipes for the Scrapple, please call or email me!

Greg Hutchins of Heritage Farm has outstanding grass-fed Meats! On Special this week: 1/2 Beef and 1/4 Beef Shares! Great opportunity to stock your freezer! Be sure and check it out. Soup Bones are also on Special! Great Bone Broth! If you have questions, please contact Farmer Greg directly at 770-377-5380.

Amish Cereal is on special this week. This cereal is like Grapenuts – without all of the chemicals and additives. GMO-free! Homemade Amish Noodles are also on special. Add to boiling water, cook 5 – 7 minutes and they are ready. Hearty and flavorful!

Whole Chickens, part and organs will be available next month! The chickens are still growing!

Turkeys are available for Delivery 05-14 and average about 15#‘s. In addition to whole birds, Heritage Farm will also be offering Turkey Carcasses and Ground Turkey soon! There is definitely Turkey Bone Broth in my future!

Don’t forget to check out Alpaca and Water Buffalo offerings from Carrell Farms. I am very partial to the Sage and Cranberry Alpaca Sausage!

Boy are they YUMMY! Ricky’s Certified Naturally Grown, farm, Back River Farm has provided us with Veggies and Berries since Market inception! Ricky has expanded his operation this year and will be bringing us lots of green veggie goodness as well as some fruits! Welcome Back, ‘Farmer Brown’! We are glad to have you!

I expect the same this year. Always a great variety and LOTS of yummy veggies and herbs! Look for them weekly starting this week! Doug is also offering: Green Garlic, Leaf Lettuce Salad Mix, Spicy Salad Mix and Young and Tender Spinach!

Grow With the Flow is the brainchild of brothers Reggie and Roger Ramos. They are located in the city of Tucker and are Certified Naturally Grown! George and Krista Jones of Cedar Seeder also known as High Garden Center have moved to a new location. Actually the move took place a while back and George has had his hands full, building and re-vamping the property! These changes will ensure that we all will be getting their fresh Microgreens very soon. Can’t wait to enjoy their Wraps again! Krista and George will return to us in June!

Oh dear! I neglected to let you all know last week that b>Marie Wheeler of Bakery on Brooks would be gone this week! I apologize profusely! She is enjoying a week with the ‘grands’ and will return to us NEXT week! By then, those of us with an addiction to her goodies will be in need of a fix! There will be a few things on the Farmers’ Sales Table, so you may want to pickup early to snag what will be there!

Dabrielle of My Daily Bread provides us with delicious traditional wheat based Organic Baked Goods! From Challah, Sourdough, Ezekiel and other yummy Breads to Sweet Breads, Cookies, Jams and Jellies, Cheese Dips and Pasta Salads, Dabrielle is passionate about quality! Be sure and get your order in before close of Market!

I ordered her Buffalo Bleu Cheese Dip last week! It does clearly state: “not for the faint of heart!”! Oh WOW – that is a brilliant description! Very delicious, but HOT. Dabrielle just laughed and laughed at me when I called to tell her my mouth was on fire! “Maryanne, it says right in the description…” Well, yes, it DOES! Now … see what happens when you don’t READ things that you should! (hint – read the newsletter!)

Kathy Barnes is the Coordinator of the Lilburn Market as well as the owner of So-Koi. Kathy is an excellent seamstress and has Retro Aprons, Lanyards, Pillowcases, Checkbook Covers, Tissue Holders on the Market. She is passionate about living naturally and makes every effort to live ‘green’! Although always concerned about the use of plastic in our lives, further research lead Kathy to the decision that she wants to eliminate it as much as possible! To assist in this goal, she has created muslin Veggie Storage Bags and is now offering them at Market! Check them out on the Market and on the Farmers’ Sales Table this week at each Market! For more information about plastic and it’s horrible, destructive and toxic effects in our world and the ecosystem, click the link. This documentary is available on Netflix!

Plastic Paradise

Kathy is also offering Turmeric and Cinnamon on the Market. Both are wonderful spice with medicinal components and qualities. (and the glass jars she offers these products in are just adorable!) Kathy will also be offering Coconut Sugar in the very near future. This sweetener is an excellent alternative. It’s low glycemic index and full, rich flavor make it my favorite sugar, both for baking and adding a touch to my coffee. Look for this option soon under seasonings.

…this and that…

Thank you all for your support of the Market! Although I drive quite a way on Thursday and so enjoy my time at Markets, I truly could NOT run the Markets without Kathy Barnes, Coordinator of Lilburn Market and Sarah Rockey, Coordinator of The Hamilton Mill Market! These dedicated, selfless, generous ladies give up much more than the mere 2 hours you see them at Market! Their Thursdays are dedicated to Market prep, pickup, sorting, delivery, setup before Market pickup even begins! In addition, they do the initial bookkeeping for their Market and get that information to me; coordinate information with me and put up with my phone calls to clarify information or get input from them. I ask you, the Members to express your gratitude to both Kathy and Sarah! Without them, you would not have a Market! Thank you Sarah and Kathy for ALL you do and for believing in our mission!

Someone mentioned to me last week that I hadn’t written a Black Lab Update in a very long time…After our sudden move up to the North Georgia Mountains he found great escape hole in the backyard fence; and dug some pretty impressive ones also. My fear that he would be hit and killed or hurt AND my angst at his ability to escape motivated the installation of the underground fence. Since putting it in, there have been no escapades into the surrounding area and I have peace of mind. His love of being outside knows no limits and he basks in the sun daily. Besides loving the sunshine, he also enjoys being out in the rain – much to my dismay! He won’t go near a lake, river or stream, but loves the rain! He turned 10 in March, is healthy and happy and still full of life and his antics make me laugh out loud! Recently he enjoyed a visit from Dabrielle’s 4 pound Yorkie (Moochie) and 4 pound Chichuaha (Minnie/Dixie). He was quite the host, although Minnie let him know that she would be ‘the boss of him’ while she was here. Watching her chase him through the backyard brought many a laugh-out-loud-moments…

Thank you for taking the time to read this bit of information!

Please know that we appreciate the support of Crossfit O-Zone Gym, All Saints Lutheran Church and Hamilton Mill Home Owners Association for the use of the great spaces for Market. We are grateful for you and for your support of our dedicated, LOCAL Farmers/Growers and Artisans.

Countdown to Close ... Please Read!

Market Closes at 8:00pm Monday!

Thank you to those who have already placed orders!

In October we found it necessary to establish minimums for each Market. After Market close this evening, you will receive an email letting you know that minimum for the Market was not met and you will be given a choice to pick up at the Lawrenceville location or cancellation of your order. We sincerely hope that this will not be the case; however, at the time of this writing the total for the Market is a little more than 1/4 of the required minimum of $650.

Please be assured that we are doing everything we can to provide you with what you want from the local Farmers/Growers and Producers; but, please understand that Buying Local means supporting those who are committed to providing ‘Local’! Please continue to share the Market with friends and family!

Last week, I wrote that Marie Wheeler of Bakery on Brooks had joined the Market last Summer – actually, it was last Winter! Wow! How time flies! We are just happy and blessed to have such a wonderful Gluten Free Baker with us!

Since I don’t feed the Black Lab Cinnamon Rolls, the package of 5 had to go in the freezer lest I eat them all in a couple of days! I L O V E Cinnamon Rolls, but, alas, they cannot be an everyday staple! While this solution was working, I wondered (out loud and in a phone call with Marie) if it would be possible to give me the rolls frozen and I could then let them rise and bake them when I wanted them. Marie gave me several as an ‘experiment’ last week! Oh. My. Goodness!!! That is what they were – pure goodness. The Cinnamon Rolls rose and I baked them in the toaster oven. Fresh Baked Cinnamon Rolls, Gluten Free – no muss, no fuss and delicious! Marie decided to put them on the Market (You can still get them already baked!) and this week, they are on special! Not only that, she has increased the offering to 6 rolls! Sweet Breakfast Treat or a quick dessert; these Gluten Free Cinnamon Rolls are tasty morsels!

While Marie is keeping us supplied with Organic Gluten Free Baked Goods, Dabrielle of My Daily Bread provides us with traditional wheat based Organic Baked Goods! From Challah, Sourdough, Ezekiel and other yummy Breads to Sweet Breads, Cookies, Jams and Jellies, Cheese Dips and Pasta Salads, Dabrielle is passionate about quality! I am really enjoying the Gluten Free Cinnamon Rolls offered by Marie Wheeler of Bakery on Brooks! (Actually, I enjoy all of Marie’s creations, but these rolls are such a decadent Breakfast Treat I just had to give them a special ‘two thumbs up’! Marie started baking Gluten Free items for the Market last Summer. She started out with Oatmeal Raisin, Chocolate Chip and Chocolate Chip Oat Cookies and they were so popular and delicious, Marie became inspired! Nothing is offered at the Market until it passes muster with her husband, Chuck! (Chuck does not have to eat Gluten Free, but because Marie does, he joins her! What a sweetheart he is!) It’s no wonder they recently celebrated their 40th Anniversary! Try Marie;s Breads, Cookies, Paleo Treats, new Butter Cake, Cinnamon Rolls, Cinnamon Raisin Bread – you will wonder why you waited to go Gluten Free!

While Marie is keeping us supplied with Organic Gluten Free Baked Goods, Dabrielle of My Daily Bread provides us with traditional wheat based Organic Baked Goods!
